Most women with cyclical breast pain are helped with simple reassurance that they do not have breast cancer and only one tenth need drug therapy to alleviate their symptoms. A recent study at the Longmore breast unit at the Western General Infirmary, Edinburgh, showed that 78 percent of 797 women were satisfied that they had no underlying disease. Of the 179 women who went on to attend the specialised breast pain clinic more than half were treated effectively with pyridoxine (vitamin B6) or oil of evening primrose. The recommended regime is 100 mg pyridoxine daily for three months. If it helps, 25 mg to 50 mg daily may be taken for the two weeks preceding menstruation for a further three months. Three grams of oil of evening primrose should be taken daily for one month, reducing to two grams daily for a further two months. If successful, this amount may be taken continuously. FENTMORE, 1.
