Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that can either be ingested in food or manufactured by the body as a result of sunlight falling on the skin. Vitamin D, called “the sunshine vitamin” because your body makes all it needs with enough sunlight, but many people do not get enough sun to generate adequate vitamin D, especially in winter. Is essential for healthy bones and may slow the progression of osteoporosis and strengthen the immune system and possibly help to prevent some diseases.
What is more, the body’s ability to manufacture vitamin D declines with age, so vitamin D deficiencies are common in older people. The basic function of vitamin D is to regulate blood calcium and phosphorus, helping to build strong bones and healthy teeth.
Without sufficient vitamin D, the body cannot absorb calcium from food or supplements. When blood calcium levels are low, the body will move calcium from the bones to the blood to supply the muscles, especially those of the heart- and the nerves with the amount they need. Over time, this reallocation of calcium leads to a loss of bone mass.
Today the scientists continuing discover more about the functions of vitamin D.
