Garlic 8.250 mg
Allicin potential of 5500µg
Lamberts® Garlic 8250mg are high potency tablets which are carefully formulated to ensure the active ingredients are preserved, whilst the special coating reduces the garlic odour. Each tablet contains a level of garlic, equivalent to 8250mg of fresh garlic, with an allicin potential of 5500µg. The garlic used in these tablets is significantly closer to the nutritional profile of natural, raw garlic than many low priced ‘high street’ brands of garlic.
The active ingredients in garlic are believed to be the many sulphur containing compounds, one of which is alliin. This is converted to allicin when the garlic is chewed or crushed.
Garlic can be taken indefinitely but if you are using it for cholesterol problems then don’t forget to have your levels checked regularly in case you need to take other measures.
We use 550mg of a garlic powder 3:1 extract, giving the 8250mg of raw material. We already state the allicin potential of 5500µg.
Our product is not deodorised. We often have customers saying they have found that garlic repeats on them and is very smelly! Unfortunately, many of the benefits of garlic come from the sulphur containing compounds such as allicin, which is also responsible for much of the smell. If we removed the odour we would have to destroy the beneficial compounds, which obviously is undesirable. As it is smelly we suggest to customers they can aid the breakdown of the garlic and reduce the risk of the odour lingering by ensuring you take the product with a main meal and ideally in the evening, so the garlic can be digested overnight. Again many high street brand deodorise, taking out the active compounds.
The main component in raw garlic is alliin but as soon as you crush or cut a clove of garlic, the cell walls are split so that an enzyme called alliinase is released, which converts alliin into allicin. As it is allicin that is the active constituent, most practitioners and customers will be comparing allicin rather than alliin.
The best thing to look out for when you are comparing the brands is the type of garlic extract. Dried garlic powder is considered to have effects similar to those of fresh, crushed garlic. Other types of supplements, such as oils from crushed garlic, aged garlic extract in alcohol, and steam-distilled oils seem to contain less allicin and perhaps less of other active compounds than the dried powder. As we use a dried powder this is how it is closer to fresh garlic.
