Winter can wreak havoc on the skin. Harsh weather, drying central heating and extreme contrasts in temperature can leave your skin dehydrated, sensitive and prone to irritation. Follow our top ten tips to keep your complexion in good shape.

    • Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables as they supply the important antioxidant vitamins A, C and E.Drink lots of water to flush out impurities – ideally 1-2 litres a day.

    • Use a good moisturiser that is appropriate for your skin type to keep the skin smooth and supple and to provide a barrier against the elements. Avoid heavily perfumed creams – light, hypo-allergenic formulations are probably your best bet. Invest in a good lip balm to prevent dry, cracked lips.

    • Relax in a warm bath with scented moisturising oils but don’t soak for too long as this can dehydrate the skin.

    • Embark on a regular exercise programme, such as cycling, exercise classes or brisk walking to boost the circulation.

    • Use facial and body scrubs once a week to slough away dead skin cells and encourage cell renewal, but be gentle if you have sensitive skin.

    • If you live and work in centrally heated surroundings, place bowls of water near to radiators to humidify the atmosphere. Choose natural fibre clothing which allows the skin to breathe.

    • Avoid substances known to cause allergies or irritate your skin. Examples include certain foods, chemical substances and perfumes.

    • Keep your alcohol intake to a minimum – alcohol dehydrates the skin.

  • Set aside quality time to relax and make sure you get your beauty sleep!
